Chapter Five

A&E, Guildford Hospital

“Give a false name,” Dawn snapped at Andrea as she sat down in the chair in the waiting room, feeling faint from the loss of blood.

“Why?” Andrea failed to understand, Dawn briefly grabbed Andrea’s wrist and twisted.

“Give my real name and the agency will descend in ten minutes. I’ll be arrested and there will be no one to stop Kendrick from hurting Prince Arthur and Prince George. Understood?”

“Yes, alright, let go of my arm, you lunatic agent,” Andrea snapped her arm away and hurried to the counter to book her in.

The cameraman continued to stare at Dawn uncertainly. She had already threatened to remove a certain part of his anatomy if he filmed a single shot of her. He was taking the threat very seriously, his eyes settled on her wound.

Dawn pulled her hand away again, the blood had seeped into the lines of her palm.

It was but a matter of thirty seconds before the doctors came to her.

“Come with us, Miss Greenaway,” they hurried her through.

“We’ll see you soon, Elaine!” Andrea waved at her, neatly delivering to her the false name she had given. Elaine? Dawn audibly groaned at the name she had chosen.

“Would you care to tell me why someone was shooting at you, Miss Greenaway?” The doctor asked as they walked her through the emergency doors and into the ward, skipping triage and heading straight for treatment.

“No,” Dawn said simply as they sat her down on a bed and pulled curtains around for privacy.

“Alright,” a new doctor stepped forward, dressed in full PPE with a mask just in case any patients carried unfriendly diseases. The doctor squeezed her shoulder, making her wince in pain. “There’s an entry and exit wound. No bone hit. You’re lucky. Flesh wound. No operation to get rid of the bullet.”

“Good,” Dawn was genuinely relieved. She couldn’t lose any more time. An operation would have set her back further.

He got away. He was inches from her and yet he escaped.

She was fuming, breathing heavily from both the pain and the anger.

“Let’s patch you up,” the doctor went to get a needle and thread for the stitches.

“Be quick,” she ordered. She needed to make up time if Arthur and George were going to have a chance.

She winced and screwed up her face in agony as the doctor worked. They had offered her a local anaesthetic, but she refused to take it, preferring to keep all her nerves on alert. Halfway through the procedure, Andrea and the cameraman burst into the ward—doctors and nurses tried their best to hold them back, but they still barged through.

“Dawn—look,” Andrea passed Dawn her phone. It was playing a video. The figure dressed head-to-toe in black was standing in front of the roaring Loch Ness Monster once again—Riley. He was facing the camera, practically shouting down the lens with his face covered and arms folded.

“So, you choose to come after me? Hmm? Try to kill me before I can reach those pathetic boys?” His booming voice was shaking his camera.
